Diversity as a Lived Reality at the BRK Bayreuth
The Bayreuth district branch of the Bavarian Red Cross (BRK) sees itself as an open-minded and inclusive organization – in keeping with the spirit of the global Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Regardless of origin, religion, or political beliefs, the Red Cross in Bayreuth is open to all people. A look at the workforce clearly shows that diversity here is more than just a value – it’s a lived reality: employees from 33 different countries currently work at the BRK Bayreuth district branch. Around 11 percent of the approximately 680 employees have an international background. This diversity is particularly evident in the field of nursing – here, nearly one in three professionals has roots abroad. This international composition enriches daily work but also presents new challenges for collaboration.
Training for Greater Intercultural Competence
To further strengthen cooperation in an increasingly multicultural work environment, the BRK Bayreuth district branch – in collaboration with neighboring branches – invited nursing leaders to take part in a special training session: “International Professionals – Opportunity and Challenge.” The aim was to raise awareness of cultural differences and enhance participants’ intercultural competence.
Insights and Interactive Learning Units
The session began with a short keynote by Ibukun Koussemou, Integration Officer for the City of Bayreuth. This was followed by an interactive training unit led by Priscilla Hirschhausen – an expert in integration and intercultural communication. Participants explored the opportunities and potential pitfalls of integrating international professionals, developed practical strategies for successful collaboration, and reflected on their own experiences.
A Clear Commitment to Lived Diversity
With this training, the BRK Bayreuth district branch sends a strong message: diversity is not only welcome – it is actively embraced and seen as a valuable asset. A meaningful contribution to a respectful, appreciative work environment – and thus to the successful fulfillment of the Red Cross mission: helping people.
