Expedition: Emergency Call 112 – Care & Career visits the Integrated Emergency Dispatch Centre and Ambulance Service

Behind the scenes: Care & Career visits the Integrated Emergency Dispatch Centre and Ambulance Service

How does an emergency call work? What technology is used at the dispatch centre? And what does working in the ambulance service involve? Participants in the Care & Career project gained fascinating insights into the BRK’s diverse areas of responsibility during two visits in Bayreuth.

In May, trainees and participants in the adaptation training programme of the Care & Career project visited the Integrated Emergency Dispatch Centre Bayreuth/Kulmbach. During guided tours of the dispatch centre and visits to the ambulance service, they learned about the procedures behind the European emergency number 112 and discovered how the different departments work together in emergency situations.

The groups were accompanied by Markus Ruckdeschel, Managing Director of the BRK District Association, Chen Chen, Project Manager of Care & Career, and Lena Röglinger, Internal Integration Coordinator.

Modern technology and multilingual emergency call handling

The technical equipment at the Integrated Emergency Dispatch Centre was of particular interest. Participants learned how incoming emergency calls are answered and assessed, and how the necessary emergency response teams are alerted. They were also introduced to the AI-assisted translation system, which enables communication with people who do not speak German or have limited German language skills.

A practical demonstration of multilingual emergency calls with simultaneous AI translation provided particularly valuable insights. Participants were able to experience first-hand how modern technology can overcome language barriers and support communication in emergency situations.

Insights into the ambulance service

The ambulance service was also part of the programme. During a presentation of a modern ambulance, visitors gained an impression of the extensive medical equipment and the wide range of responsibilities carried out by emergency medical personnel.

One participant even had the opportunity to experience a medical examination first-hand: an EEG (electroencephalogram) was performed on him as a demonstration. This procedure measures the electrical activity of the brain.

A wide range of career opportunities at the BRK

The visits highlighted how closely the emergency dispatch centre and ambulance service work together and demonstrated the technical, organisational and medical requirements involved in emergency response.

At the same time, they showcased the variety of professional fields within the BRK and the different opportunities for career development within the organisation.

For the participants in the Care & Career project, the two visits therefore offered more than just an exciting behind-the-scenes look. They also provided an opportunity to explore potential career paths and deepen their understanding of the BRK’s structures and responsibilities.
